  • 2025

The African Brain Data Network (ABDN) is proud to spotlight one of its key partners, the African Brain for me Brain Data Images (AB4ABI) project, as it prepares for a special neuroscience event this year. This initiative is part of AB4ABI’s commitment to advancing scientific exchange between African and German researchers, with full alignment to ABDN’s mission of empowering neuroscience research across Africa.

🌍 About AB4ABI

The AB4ABI project is funded by the prestigious DFG African-German Scientific Exchange in the Field of Neurosciences Grant, which supports the initiation of new research collaborations between African and German-based neuroscientists.

  • Project Title: African Brain for me Brain Data Images (AB4ABI)
  • Grant: DFG African-German Scientific Exchange in Neurosciences
  • Principal Investigator: Prof. Silke Anders, Professor of Social and Affective Neuroscience, University of Lübeck, Germany
  • Co-Principal Investigator: Dr. Eberechi Wogu, Neuroscientist and Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria

The AB4ABI initiative fosters inclusive, transcontinental research partnerships and plays a key role in building sustainable neuroscience capacity across Africa.

🤝 Strengthening Ties within the ABDN Ecosystem

As a committed partner within the ABDN ecosystem, AB4ABI has been instrumental in:

  • Facilitating exchange between African and German neuroscience communities
  • Supporting early-career African researchers with training, mentorship, and access to collaborative platforms
  • Promoting data equity, reproducibility, and culturally inclusive brain research

The upcoming event—organized within the framework of the AB4ABI-DFG grant—will further ABDN’s mission by advancing discussions around neuroimaging infrastructure, brain data standardization, and African-led research priorities.

🧠 A Shared Vision for Brain Science in Africa

ABDN and AB4ABI share a vision of neuroscience that is equitable, collaborative, and globally connected. By combining the scientific leadership of researchers like Prof. Silke Anders and Dr. Eberechi Wogu with the regional momentum fostered by ABDN, this partnership is creating new pathways for Africa’s active participation in global brain research.

“We’re not just sharing data—we’re shaping the future of neuroscience together,” says Dr. Wogu. “This partnership reflects our belief that African brain data, voices, and researchers deserve a central place in the global scientific community.”

📅 Event Details Coming Soon

The upcoming AB4ABI neuroscience event—hosted in collaboration with German and African institutions—will include expert panels, technical workshops, and strategic discussions on enhancing cross-continental research partnerships.
